My little stabbity-stab at Amazon
My Prime membership renewal date was March 2. Nope. Not anymore. Sorry, Amazon. I was a Prime member for 5 years, but I'm not renewing. See, out there in the Real World are a bunch of people I think of as my Book Peeps. A bunch of that bunch happen to be writers. I know it doesn't seem like they're really authors when they're hanging out at some Bar Con or other, but they really do write books. It turns out that a lot of my actual personal OMG friends write for Tor. And you, Amazon, in an absolutely stunning show of ass-hattery, pulled all of their print titles from direct sale.I don't care about ebook pricing because I do not and will not own a Kindle or any other ebook reader in the foreseeable future. I most likely wouldn't have made this choice except that these are people I care about, they're caught up in a battle of the freakin' titans, and it's the only way I know to show my support. I will continue to buy books and pass them along to people I know will read and enjoy them - it's how I create more fans of the genre. I don't need Amazon's discount shipping for that. Ass. Hats. Maybe I'll even buy that stupid B&N card... | | Sunday, November 1st, 2009 | | 8:01 pm |
Too much of Teh Fun, not enough of Teh Time
I saw my Smarch Peeps. I saw my WFC Peeps. I got Birthday Books from my dear friend Cheryl Morgan, and said books were signed by their illustrious creators (Ken Scholes and Paolo Bacigalupi). I bought myself some fabulous sparkly jewelry from my favorite jeweler/artist. Also, I was reminded that The Universe has blessed me many times over and that I'm an absolute shit if I forget that for even one second. I'm working on not being a shit. So. I saw good friends that I had missed terribly for most of this year. It's been a Very Big Year for me and I wanted to share it all with Ma Peeps. Those of you who took the time to listen while I churned through some of the lessons I'm working on right now, I love you. Thanks for being my friend :) Weird things happened, like when Tessa introduced Tad Williams and Jeff VanderMeer. I asked Tessa how it has become possible that two such Very Awesome Persons as Tad and Jeff did not know one another, but did know us...? Then we ran into my friend Ken Scholes, and I got to introduce Ken to Tad. Again, how can two such Very Awesome Persons not have known one another before this morning? The mind boggles. I had two parties, really. Friday night's Mass Autographing session was a huge success, due in large part to the incredibly capable people who were willing to offer their advice and expertise throughout the night, and to my Volunteer Army. All I had to do was stay somewhere I could be found if anyone needed me, and they mostly didn't. It felt great to have people tell us how much they enjoyed the whole thing. Saturday night was my "Zombies! Costumes! Cupcakes!" birthday bash. Tessa helped me set up and contributed a metric tonne of Tim Tams, Cindy tended bar, and the lovely Paul Goodman was my back-up bartender. Good parties require the help of great friends! Tons of people came by to see me (John Pitts brought me roses, because he's also Ma Peeps), but I didn't get enough photos of my guests. I know Cindy Yan, Cindy Squires, Barbara, Tessa, Beth, Lisa, Marian, Katya, Elsa, Myke Cole, John Picacio (who returned a few times for Cindy's White Russians), John Klima, Mark Teppo, Ken Scholes, Paolo Bacigalupi, Kevin Standlee, Cheryl Morgan, Erin Cashier (who wants to use ray guns just like Cheryl's for her bridesmaids), Graham Joyce (aka Graham Fucking Joyce!!!), Jay Lake, Ann and Jeff VanderMeer, L.E. Modesitt, Liz Gorinsky, Dave Gallaher, Andy Trembly, Kevin Roche, Cindy Scott, buncha guys that came back with Myke, Jetse De Vries...oh, it gets foggy! I know I had to leave my party to go down the hall to see Stephen Segal and his fabulous hair, though, and then over to the Con Suite for some really fabulous sherry. In any case, it was the best birthday party I've ever had, and it didn't wind down until I kicked the stragglers out at 4am. Seriously, I cannot imagine a better way to spend my not-actual-birthday than with those people. I have posted pics on flickr. | | Saturday, October 31st, 2009 | | 9:46 am |
On WFC and Good Peeps
I've had an eventful WFC so far. I found Ma Peeps, the Mass Autographing happened (and seems to have been a screaming success), and I bought some truly fabulous jewelry from my favorite jeweler/artist/goddess. Today I may even get to go to a panel! I've escaped the hotel for n hour or so to fetch supplies for party fliers. The cupcakes will be delivered around 3pm, then I'm off to the grocery store for a few last-minute items. Dinner tonite with ![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif?v=92.2) , then my birthday party! I hope to get a lot of pics to post tomorrow. I plan to pick up some books today and actually get them signed. That's right, I had no time at the Mass Autographing to get books signed for myself. Go figure. | | Thursday, October 29th, 2009 | | 6:06 am |
Almost ready to go...
Ok, not really. I put all of the stuff for the party in the truck last night and just left the actual "what I'm wearing" packing for this morning. I'm going to pack RIGHT NOW, though, and check my lists again. I have a lunch meeting in Sunnyvale, and then I'm off to the hotel. Most of my gang arrived yesterday and I absolutely can't wait to catch up with everyone. WFC, here I come! | | Thursday, October 8th, 2009 | | 7:34 pm |
WFC 2009 prep
I'm really looking forward to World Fantasy this year. Planning two events - one large and public, one on a much smaller but still public scale - is no longer stressing me out. I'm all zen master now. My friend Tessa is coming all the way from the other side of the world to spend the weekend with us and OMG I CAN'T WAIT! Also, she had this to say about her schedule: "Saturday night is the Gigawatt's birthday party, featuring zombies and cupcakes..." I'll be referring to myself in the 3rd person for a while. "Gigawatt doesn't like that," or "Gigawatt would prefer the dark chocolate, tyvm," or "Gigawatt IS NOT PLEASED." Right now Gigawatt needs to go eat a Boca burger, but she felt the need to peek in and say hi. Gigawatt out. | | Monday, July 20th, 2009 | | 9:17 pm |
Happy Con prep!
My nephew and I leave on our grand Comic Con adventure Wednesday evening. This is an entirely new experience for the both of us. He's never been to a multi-day con, and he's never been away on an adventure with me. I've certainly never gone to a con with a teenager in tow (OMG no drinking!). I absolutely cannot wait. I think he's going to have a fabulous time, and I know he's going to surprise me with his choice of panels and activities. I've left it up to him to set his own schedule - he can hang out with me, or he can do his own thing. I hope he wants to hang out with me :) The laptop is going on vacation with us, so hopefully I'll have pics for the flickr stream while we're there. For now, it's back to packing and list-making! | | Thursday, July 16th, 2009 | | 9:08 pm |
Towards good health
I have purchased protein shakes from Costco that contain 30g/protein per serving. They taste less than delicious, but I know I am not getting enough protein in my diet to build muscle, so I caved. They're ok mixed with leftover coffee. I also picked up calcium supplements. My daily multivitamin just isn't going to cut it there. Why is it that a calcium PILL is enormous, but a CHEW is only the size of a Starburst candy? You can guess which ones I got. I take my vitamins, eat no meat, supplement my protein intake, perform both cardio and strength training... My cousin insists, when she sees pics of the "old" me, that I killed that fat lady and hid the body. Looks like maybe she's right! | | Friday, May 15th, 2009 | | 7:01 pm |
Oh hai!
Guess what today is? If you guessed it's "Two Years Since Gigi Quit Smoking Day" you win! I did not buy shoes. I got a new car stereo, though ;) | | Saturday, April 18th, 2009 | | 9:25 am |
Save the Date...
If you're attending WFC this year in San Jose, please plan to attend my birthday party on Saturday 10/31 at the Fairmont. It's a BIG BIRTHDAY, people, and you are the peeps with whom I want to share it. I've decided to get a suite for the night, have a real party, and let the whole of WFC wish me a happy birthday. Oh yeah, I'm a giver. Bring a costume (it's Halloween, people!). And be prepared to tell me how fabulous I look. I will give you drinks and cupcakes! See? That was easy ;) | | Friday, April 10th, 2009 | | 4:10 pm |
Flight Delay
My flight may be slightly or seriously delayed. Fingers crossed for "slightly." | | Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 | | 9:49 pm |
Is it Friday yet?
Peeps! Norwescon is this weekend! I get to see mah Northwest PEEPS! Ahem. I may - just may - need a tiny bit of vacation. Am very excited. Also? New costumey clothes. Whee! | | Friday, March 20th, 2009 | | 12:33 pm |
I HEART being a fangrrl
I have always been a "fan" of science fiction and fantasy. I remember begging my mom to let me stay up and watch Space 1999. I remember reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in third grade (twice). Those realms have been part of me as long as I can remember. I didn't find fandom, though, until my 30's, and what a glorious experience it's been. I have met some truly wonderful people through WorldCon and World Fantasy. It was World Fantasy in Tempe, in fact, that led me down the garden path to LJ and keeping in touch with most of my peeps. Which leads to today's moment of SKWEE when I read the Hugo and Campbell nominations. Have you seen them? Are you all full of love for cool things happening to your peeps? http://anticipationsf.ca/English/HugosMust go send emails. Don't have emails for all of you. Tweets! I have tweeting and emailing to do. | | Thursday, March 19th, 2009 | | 5:03 am |
Mixed up
Big Happy - I got a room at the Doubletree for Norwescon. Yay! Big Sad - Another night of insomnia. This new thing, the not sleeping thing, it does not please me. Also, I have to sit through Day Three of a software deployment teleconference today. I'm supposed to be articulate. Methinks chances are rather low... | | Saturday, March 14th, 2009 | | 8:55 pm |

OK, Atlanta doesn't suck
I have a training class all week, so I flew to Atlanta early Saturday to spend time with some old friends. I haven't seen J in almost 10 years, and I've never met her three-yr-old daughter. We spent a few hours together yesterday - just long enough, really, for me to fall head over heels for that kid ;) Today we are going to the aquarium. Hopefully soon, because I am starving and want BREAKFAST. And after they head home, I'm going shopping at the freakin' HUGE mall across the street. They have Lush! And Bare Escentuals! And OMG SHOES! Did I mention that I only brought one pair of shoes with me on this trip? I know! I'm totally buying shoes today :) | | Saturday, February 21st, 2009 | | 5:41 am |
Traveling...
At the airport waiting for my 6:30 flight to Atlanta. I'm in a training class next week but am spending the weekend with a friend I haven't seen in years. I packed a light bag, but because this is a work-trip I had to bring Le Beast (my giant laptop). My carryon, she is heavy... | | Saturday, February 14th, 2009 | | 9:43 am |
Work and Cons
The vacation schedule this year is dictated by 1) my nephew, and 2) World Fantasy Convention. I'm taking my required 5 consecutive days of vacation for World Fantasy, and the remaining 5 go to a graduation, Comic Con, and family camping. I'm on the committee for WFC this year, and am specifically tasked with running the Friday Night Frenzy/Cattle Call/Author Signing. I really do need to see the site to get the floor plan done. Work has interfered, though, and I have to go to Atlanta for a training class the day before the WFC committee members will conduct their site visit. Crap. Looks as if I'll be making a solo trip sometime next month for my own site visit. | | Thursday, February 5th, 2009 | | 6:19 am |

Norwescon Room Reservation - Drat!
Seriously! I went to book my room last night and the Con hotel is totally sold out. I had to reserve at the Hilton up the road. If anybody cancels at the DoubleTree, let me know. I'll totally take your reservation. |
